FAT QUARTER PROJECTS: AROMATIC TRIVET

Posted by Melissa on 12 March 2008

This trivet protects surfaces from hot dishes, and releases a lovely scent!

You will need:

  • 1 fat quarter
  • about 4 cups rice
  • about 3/4 cup dried lavendar or other herb of choice
  • Step 1: Cut the fat quarter into 3-inch strips the long way

Step 2: Fold the strips lengthwise and iron flat.

Step 3: Sew the ends of each strip wrong-sides together, then sew along the open edge to create a tube.

Step 4: The finished length of the tube should be about 8 feet. Turn the tube rightside out. If you are using a tube-turning tool (highly recommended!), sew one end of the tube closed.

Step 5: Mix together the rice and herbs, and fill the tube using a funnel. If you don't have a funnel, paper works well! Work the rice down to the end. Fill the tube so that it is firm but not too tight, keeping the end loose because this will form the inner part of the coil and will need to bend the most.

Step 6: Sew the open end closed, then begin to coil from the center, sewing inside-to-inside so the thread is hidden.

The finished project is about 9 inches in diameter. To mix things up, you can combine different fabrics, alternating colors on each coil for instance.
